Yup, the word most of us do not want to hear…exercise. Exercise is so important in our daily lives. We all need to exercise. However, some people hear that word and all kinds of negative connotations come to mind. Let’s try to put it into an easy perspective. The “Exercise is Medicine” initiative is where physicians encourage their patients to exercise. It states that we need 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week. So, before you say I’m crazy, let’s say that movement counts. Did you know that regular exercise or movement can allow medications to be reduced, and some illnesses can even go away! The best movement for anyone is walking. All you need are sneakers. If you say yuck, then maybe try walking with a friend, spouse, or a group. These allow many social benefits and makes it more fun. You can change your intensity, location, and terrain to make it better. Don’t say, “I have no time.” Everybody has a lull in the day or week where you don’t have much to do. This is the time to get out there. If you can sit at your computer at home for hours on end, then you can walk. You need to get up every hour and move. If you don’t, this can affect your cardiovascular system. Other exercise for the adventurous include running, cycling (my favorite), rowing, swimming, even dancing. You just need to find something you like. Remember, it is not about your distance, but the minutes (30 minutes). If you have pain and discomfort from other issues, then intensity can be adjusted, and activity modified to your comfort level. Exercise can be inside, outside, at home, or at a fitness center.
Exercise is cool. It can help reduce insulin sensitivity (diabetes), improve looks, drop weight, decrease blood pressure, increase blood flow, and help your psychological function. Exercise will increase your flexibility, endurance, and strength, which will reduce your chances of falling. Let’s face it: the more sedentary we are, the older we look.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s get out there, but be safe. Allemande left and docey-do right out the door.
